Blood Pressure Monitoring Service

Strangford Pharmacy has purchased a new Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor for the community.

This machine measures systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate for diagnosis and checkup.  It is a great addition to our services and can be easily accessed in our pharmacy.

This machine was purchased by Strangford Pharmacy for the whole community to use.  We suggest a small donation of £1 per reading to re-coup the cost and pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the machine.  We hope you appreciate having this available to you and ask you to treat it with care.

If you need any help with using the machine or reading the results please ask the Pharmacist or Pharmacy Assistant for some help.

What is high blood pressure?

Blood pressure is simply the pressure of the blood on the walls of your arteries (blood vessels). These arteries carry blood from your heart around the body. Your blood pressure changes throughout the day and is at its lowest when you are asleep. Blood pressure fluctuates due to many events such as stress, physical exercise, anxiety and emotion.

Facts and figures

Current predictions indicate that there are 16 million people in the UK with high blood pressure.

Many people are unaware that their blood pressure is raised because they do not experience any signs or symptoms. That’s why it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly to ensure you are not at risk.

Persistent high blood pressure can cause damage to your blood vessels which can contribute to severe long term health risks such as a stroke, heart disease and damage to the eyes and kidneys.

The good news is that high blood pressure can be reduced by making simple lifestyle changes such as -

  • Eat a well balanced diet, aim for at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day
  • Eat less salt in your diet
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Lose weight if you need to
  • Take regular exercise[spacer height
  • Stop smoking (Strangford Pharmacy can offer advice, help and support)
  • Learn to relax and take some time out from the stress and strains of daily life.

If your blood pressure is persistently high your doctor can prescribe effective medicines that can significantly decrease your blood pressure if required.

Who is at risk?

In many cases there is no definite cause of high blood pressure. However, getting older, your lifestyle and a family history of high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke can all contribute to your risk. Other risk factors include:

  • Being overweight
  • Having too much salt in your diet
  • Drinking too much alcohol

  • Stress
  • Drinking too much caffeine
  • Being of African, Caribbean or South Asian descent
